Bungo Stray Dogs is a Japanese manga series written by Kafka Asagiri and illustrated by Sango Harukawa, serialized in Kadokawa Shoten's seinen manga magazine Young Ace since 2012. Each character is named after influential authors and writers of the late 19th to early 20th century, with powers based on said author's books. The series follows the Armed Detective Agency as they protect Yokohama from organizations such as the Port Mafia, focusing on the weretiger Atsushi Nakajima, who joins others gifted with supernatural abilities to solve mysteries and carry out missions.

The manga originated from Asagiri's desire to write famous literary artists as fighters, inspired by a Nico Nico Douga video. In writing the cast, Asagiri focused on weak characters, deeming Atsushi a weak hero who needs help from his wise mentor, Osamu Dazai. The author read multiple novels to feature as many writers as possible, while Dazai's character was mostly explored in light novels. The white tiger from Nakajima's story was something artist Harukawa always wanted to draw. Asagiri purposely made the main character a person with no personality to connect with unique characters around the reader.
